sweet friends and sweet feet

thank you for all the sweet thoughts for tirzah.

my mom keeps asking how i am, cuz i am an avoider. :-) since i am avoiding, i am doing fine :-D

seriously, right now i am good, in 10-14 days when all the results come in, i will be "processing" and stressing out. but right now i am good.

it is untolerably hot! by 10 am we were in the pool. if you are sweating, i mean "glistening" while making breakfast, it is not gonna be a good day.

kezzi's green and prurple stripey socks now fit her 5 yr old sister, so i am working on replacements. 68 st jaywalkers.

here are mom's new socks

luxe fibre handdyed for me "hawthorne" colourway
sport weight
US 3
a hard to see cable at the ankles.
natasha did an awesome job, no pooling, the stripes lined up perfectly. i am really impressed!

We are at UCDavis today for Tirzah.
Please pray for good kidney functions!

tirzah still has a large ammount of blood/protein in her urine.
they took 5 vials of blood to run more tests, and we have a few more tests next week.
depending on those, she may need a kidney biopsy. to see how far things have progressed.

please keep tirzah in prayer.

this crazy life

we are totally wiped out today!
yesterday, without a camera ofcourse, we went to our friend's houseboat.
tubing, jetskiing and just living in the water all day.
it was very wonderful, no sunburms.
tali even went down the water slide twice. so brave for not being 2 yet!
zemeira was telling our friend who was driving the boat not to drive her parents so fast, as i was saying faster, i guess she said "you are causing a scene" how funny is that?
my goal was to freak sam out and flip him. which i did. heehee

a local pastor is out of town, so he has Sam doing the preaching today-both services. in a few weeks it will be on TV and i will try to tape it. i wonder how sore he is after yesterday's activities.... he got up early, i slept in, though i did open an eye and check on his choice of clothing. (you can't trust men to actually dress themselves.)

this month has been soo busy, we were both home on thursday at the same time for the first time in 3 weeks. (last saturday i was speaking for a church women's function to educate them on jewish things and encourage them to support and visit israel. so i was gone and he was home)
when he comes home today, i am off to brooke's to knit and stuff.

and we haven't even gotten to high holy days, and bat mitzvahs!

and yes, i have been avoiding the whole 15 yrs post hurricane andrew thing.
i am doing fine.
i can breathe, and even better i can let go of things and throw them away with out freaking out now. why does that happen after you loose your entire home?
4 yrs after things weren't good there still, why do they think katrina's aftermath should be different? homestead just wanted trash service a year after the hurricane.

How to get Cheap books

I got my books at a local interfaith bookstore (christian , judaica, catholic)
not a big chain, but real locals. they have a homeschool section of both new and used books.
that is where i got mine.
you can also go to used curric. sales with local homeschool support groups.
this is a good way to talk to those who used it, or chose not to, and find out why, or what worked for them, and how to make it work for you.
no one homeschools the same, just like no one cooks the same. you might follow a recipe diligently or use a recipe as a guideline adding little bits here and there. i am the latter obviously.

my friend is moving and giving me her high school stuff, i dont need it yet, but i will sooner than i think.
growing up in the homeschool movement, being the daughter of a homeschool auther, i don't talk about it much cuz we always talked about it. i have spoken before state legislators on behalf of legal homeschooling. so it was kinda an out of place post on my blog :-)
i am surprised at how many comments it got :-)

68 stitch Jaywalkers

the others are so big on my feet and i am making these for my daughter who is quickly stealing my shoes....

CO 68sts

Begin zigzag pattern:
Round 1: k every stitch.
Round 2: *k-f/b, k6 , dd, k6, k-f/b; repeat from * a total of 4 times.

Work zigzag pattern until leg measures 6 3/4 inches / 17 cm (7 inches / 18 cm) or desired length to top of heel. End with round 1.

Heel flap:
k34 sts form the heel flap.
The remaining 34 sts form the instep and are unused for the moment. Work heel back and forth, turning after every row.
Row 1: *sl1, k1; repeat from *.
Row 2: sl1, p33
Repeat the last 2 rows 13 more times.

Turn heel:
Row 1: sl1, k16, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 2: sl1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: sl1, knit within 1 st of the gap, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 4: sl1, purl to within one st of the gap, p2tog, p1, turn.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all heel sts are worked. There are 18 heel sts.

Heel gussets:
sl1, k17 heel sts, pick up and k14 sts along the side of the heel flap.
PM (a)
Work 34 instep sts in established pattern
(round 2 of zigzag pattern, but repeat from * a total of 2 times)
With an empty needle, pick up and k14 sts along the other side of the heel flap, k9 from the heel needle.
PM for center of heel

Round 1: Work to 3 sts before marker a, k2tog, k1. Work instep sts in established pattern (round 1 of zigzag pattern). After marker b= K1, ssk at beginning of needle #4, work to end.
Round 2: Work to 1 st from end of needle #1, sl1. Work instep sts in established pattern (round 2 of zigzag pattern). Sl1 at beginning of needle #4, work to end.

Repeat the last 2 rounds until there are 34 instep sts and 30 sole stitches, 64sts total.
The difference in the number of instep and sole stitches accounts for the varying tensions of zigzag and stockinette stitch patterns.

Continue even in established pattern (including the slipped stitches mentioned above) until foot measures 2 inches (5 cm) less than desired finished length.
End with round 1 of zigzag pattern.

school on a shoestring?

I picked up about $400 in school books for us this year, for $40. heehee

(among the piles bountiful feet's early american history k-3, and 4-6)

for those of you who do not know, i am homeschooling....5! of the 6 this year. bella starts kindergarten.....boohooo! i can't believe she is soooo old!

a week or so ago we got the other books for maybe $10. plus a wonderful curric. to fill in all the black history that the other textbook skim over if not completely ignore. (bottom left hand corner.)

also we got saxon math 4/5 for about $3-5, and winston grammar for about the same or less.

so besides all the SOS on the computer history, science, math and literature is covered amazingly! george washington's rules of civility was also in there. which i have always wanted.

yes i am a geek, i know it.

not pictured above is an africa set i got for tirzah's geography. it is my favourite thing so far.
we are now ready for school to start!

the sockdown smack down

to help me keep track of the challenges... i am posting the details here.

Sockdown: Ravelry is a year-long personal knitting challenge that will begin on August 1, 2007 and end on September 30, 2008. Members of Sock Knitters Anonymous are NOT required to participate in the KAL, although I'm a firm believer in "the more, the merrier" and everyone are encouraged to join in.
This challenge was designed to encourage knitters to try different techniques, master new skills, and assuage Startitis. Each month, knitters can choose between a designer or a technique to participate.
The Schedule:
08/07: Sockbug/ or Lace
09/07: Grumperina/ or Toe-up
10/07: Nancy Bush/ or Cables
11/07: Evelyn Clark/ or Mystery Sock by Mona Schmidt (November also marks the official start of the Magical Mystery Sock Tour; month's with a + will also feature an optional Mystery pattern for SKA members)
12/07: Miriam Felton/ or Cuff-down
01/08: Cookie A. / or Intarsia+
02/08: Eunny Jang/ or New heel
03/08: Ann Budd/ or Entrelac+
04/08: Jean Townsend/ or Surprise pattern - no picture of the FO
05/08: Gigi Silva/ or Fair Isle+
06/08: Priscilla Gibson-Roberts / or Design-you-own
07/08: Charlene Schurch/ or Micro-gauge+
To be eligible for each month's Sockdown prize (of which there are many), KAL knitters must finish a pair of socks within two months of the CO date (i.e. August's deadline is Sept 30). Prizes will be awarded randomly and not according to speed or the complexity of the FO.
Starting on the 1st of every month, 2 threads will begin - a progress/ WIP thread and one for FO's. On odd months, there will be a locked 3rd thread, simply to host that month's optional Mystery Sock pattern. Mystery Sock progress will be posted to the WIP or FO threads.

The Magical Mystery Sock Tour is part of Sockdown: Ravelry. Since many SKA members have expressed interest in the possibility of Mystery Sock patterns, the Tour was devised. Volunteer designers have agreed to design an original sock pattern, featuring a specific technique, for every odd month of Sockdown. This simply provides KAL participants with an additional pattern choice on every odd month. Again, participants are NOT required to knit the Mystery patterns.
These 2 (or 3) threads will be stickied for one month. They will remain active for as long as people post to them. After the 2 month deadline, the FO thread will be used to determine which KAL participants have completed that month's challenge, and prizes will be awarded.
Please remember: this is all supposed to be for fun. And managing our out-of-control stashes. And trying new things. You know, fun :)
Since this is growing into a very large undertaking, we've laid down some ground rules, The 10

Sockdown Commandents:
Thou Shalt Honor The Sockdown: Ravelry Schedule. (i.e. please don't post fair isle projects on the lace sock thread)
Thou Shalt Also Honor Thyne Ravelry Neighbors And NOT Flame Their Sockdown (Or Any Other) Projects. (please play nice)
Thou Shalt Strive To Challenge Thyself.
Thou Shalt Take Decent Photos In Good Lighting.
No, Hats/ Scarves/ Mittens/ Etc. Made With Sock Yarn DO NOT Count.
Thou Must Knit TWO Socks (clearly paired) To Be Eligible For Each Month's KAL Prizes. (One sock does not an FO make)
Thou Shalt Not Post WIP Photos To the FO Thread. (And Vice Versa)
Thou Shalt Start And Finish A Pair of Socks During The KAL Period (the alloted 2 months) To Be Eligible For Each Month's KAL Prizes (A photo must be posted in the FO thread by midnight on the last day, PST).
Thou Shalt Not Submit Photos of Baby Booties or Slippers.
Remember This Is A Personal Challenge, NOT A Competition.

sign ups are closed for SP 11, but if you are still looking for a fun swap Monkey Socks 3 is still taking sign ups. the host was one of my secret pals so i am kind a biased. :-)
i have not found the petunia bag and the almost finished socks so i began another pair. i have one done and half the cuff. i sent my pal a "while you are waiting" present. hopefully these will be in the mail on monday. not too lately but not on time.
My picnic swap box is about ready to send. hopefully it will get mailed monday too.
kezzi however is my variable. she has had such a month! hurt her knee and was out of dance for a few weeks, poison oak, fell and took skin off her palm, and now she slammed her finger in the door. it bends but is black n blue. so xrays may throw off my monday.
pray for kezzi!
