sock math

Sam’s Shoe size 12
One row = 80 stitches (sts)
One row takes approximately 5.33 minutes to knit
There are approximately 210 rows in one sock
210 rows X 5.33 min. = 1119.3 min.
1119.3 min divided by 60 min. (1 hr.) = 18.65 hrs
18.65 hrs hrs X $7.00 (minimal for skilled labor) = $130.55 for one sock
$130.55 X 2 = $ 261.10 per pair
+ materials ($21.00) = $282.10 for one pair of men's size 12 socks

presidential names

as we get ready for primaries all over, i thought i would see what our canidates' names mean.
cuz, i think meanings of names are important...
first, middle and last names if i can find them, in no particular order

Democrat
Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton - "hilarious, cheerful, happy"; divine, goddess ; fenced settlement (ok, hilarious.... and the fenced part..she married into that confinement)
Johnny Reid Edwards- "the L-rd is gracious"; wealth protector ( so will he be protecting the rich? and johnny is soo southern )
Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. -"the Lord increases"; bright fame; (robinette, hahahaha)
Christopher John Dodd -"bearer of christ"; "the L-rd is gracious"; ; dodge ( has he been dodgey on the issues?)
Maurice Robert "Mike" Gravel-"Dark Skinned" ; rocks
Dennis John Kucinich -follower of Dionysius ( the whole idolatry thing isnt for me)
Barack Hussein Obama-"blessing" ; good, small handsome one; ( blessings are always good the hussein part though)
William Blaine Richardson III-"will helmet, protection";Yellow (will he increase our military or is yellow?)

Republican
Tommy G. Thompson -"twin";farmer; son of a twin (also means double, sounds deceptive)
Willard Mitt Romney -"from the mill town"; Wanderer (wandering eye? where does he stand on polygamy?
Ronald Ernest Paul -"ruler's counselor"; "small" (considering his campaign is financed by white extermists...i dont want to know HIS ruler, and "Hi ,Vern!)
Duncan Lee Hunter - "dark warrior"; meadow; one who hunts (we are still fighting clinton's and bush's wars...we could use some one to end them, not get us in anymore)
Rudolph William Louis Giuliani -"famous wolf" -"will helmet, protection"(yikes!)
Samuel Dale Brownback- "God has heard" ( i like tha name sam, heehee)
Michael Dale Huckabee- "who can compare to G-d"; valley; (over hill , over dale... dale seems popular)
Fred Dalton Thompson- peace ruler; from the valley; son of a twin (unfortunately there will only be peace with messiah, but nice meaning)
John Sidney McCain III- "the L-rd is gracious"; Contraction Of St. Denys ;

constitution
Donald J. Grundmann- World Leader ; (yuck!)

green
Cynthia McKinney- From Kinthos, moon goddess ( still not a fan of idolatry)
Kent Mesplay -high (ok green party and his name means high? just how GREEN is he?)
Kat Swift -pure (pure what?)
Ralph Nader- Wolf Counsel ; ( is he talking to giuliani)

very interesting....

Never tease a weasel...

not even once or twice.
the weasel will not like it,
and teasing isnt nice.

my dad read us this book when matty and i were kids. when i found the beanie weasel pattern the whole idea of the book and weasel present was formed. i found the book thru barnes and noble. i hadn't remembered the knitting refrences, or the crocheting for the goat... no wonder i liked this book...or no wonder i like knitting now.

he finally got eys and arms, was wrapped and given to dad. now he can read it to the grankids.

gretel girl

Gretel by Ysolda Teague
Slouchy version
Cascade 220
Us 5 and 7

I loved this pattern. All the decreases are worked into the cabling.
I took out a plain row b/c I was short the recommended yardage.
And wound up with 3 yd of yarn left from a whole skein of 220.

Sigh!

in a time of year where there are hesitant greetings on my answering machine as people battle with "should i say merry christmas?" to the jewish family...heehee

there are moments of speechlessness, like my daughter who told the mall santa that he was evil. (tirzah was 4), or the boys making up their own christmas songs ( o christmas tree o christmas tree, why are you such an idol ) they get it from their dad!

i love to say merry christmas at the store b/c the employees often can only reply it back and are not allowed to say it first. such nonsense! G-d bless you is much more acceptible too at this season.

but my favourite thing so far this year has been hearing a poor man on vicodin preach and say "bethlehem Eu-FART-a". ROFL ROFL ROFL

oh and i got new socks! My KBFF Brooke made me some fabulous "drunk n sober" sox. ( not the drunken bees socks you've been seeing around blogland , but a special and secret pattern :-D ) now i truly believe, warm hand made socks just might be one of the real meanings of christmas. heehee

Mondays

Usually my mondays are girl scout meetings followed by an evening of textual criticism, ancient manuscript comparisons, doctrines and theology, comparative world religions...
i had no idea what goes on at my house while i am gone.
this month, no class, shew! nice holiday break!

so i have been thrown into their world of monday nights. which apparently consists of playdough, PS2 battles, board games, strange dinners daddy makes...

and it seems my hubby watches big bang theory to laugh at the nerds, cuz ya know, he is a geek after all. who works with some one who acts a little more like the guys on the show some time, i guess it is an office joke. but he sits there, laughing so hard. i just stare at him, raise an eyebrow and keep knitting.

really, it is THAT funny? guess he is more of a nerd than i realized.

Knitting for africa

Tirzah will be at an orphanage in africa next year. Those of you who regularly read this blog will know this has been a dream for her that we thought her kidneys would keep her from. However she is doing amazingly well and gets to go! whoohoo!
Several african hospitals (like bongolo) have asked for Knitted caps for babies but they are unable to get any mail service.
So she would like to bring a suitcase for of caps with her to hand out at the orphanage.
Alot of the orphans are victims of genocide, aids, etc.. and helping keep their body heat thru the caps would be a great help.
If you are interested in helping out email me. yarn yenta at yahoo

Current projects

OMG! i had to take a break from socks!
so here are some "big" needle projects i have been working on. i know big is realative, but they are not size 0,1 or 2 needle projects!

Happy Chanukah!

Jesus Celebrating Chanukah (also known as the feast of dedication) answer John 10 V22

22 Then came the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon's Colonnade. 24 The Jews gathered around him, saying, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly." 25 Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one." 31 Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?" 33 "We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God." 34 Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are gods'? 35 If he called them 'gods,' to whom the word of God came--and the Scripture cannot be broken-- 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'? 37 Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. 38 But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father."
39 Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp. 40 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. Here he stayed 41 and many people came to him. They said, "Though John never performed a miraculous sign, all that John said about this man was true." 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.

Baruch HaShem!

ok, i am way behind on posting.
but we took tirzah to UCDavis and they gave her an appointment for 6 mons from now.
this hasnt happened in 3 yrs.

also her kidneys are doing so well that they are clearing her for her trip to africa.

so please keep tirzah in prayer as she prepares the next year to go to rwanda.
thank you for all your prayers the last few yrs.

edited to add: last week they thought mom had a blood clot in her leg, which meant lots of bedrest. today it was ruled out and they are sending her for an MRI. i told my mom it was only impending death that finally got her to sit down and get off her feet. and she didnt even do that well! she was really upset over not getting to see the kids reactions to the go kart and watching them ride. (which was so much fun. tirzah has been asking for one for 3 yrs now and dad found a deal that he also got to swap computer repair for) as soon as i get pictures downloaded i will post chanukah. tonight is night 7.

so, anyone know where in the Bible, Jesus celebrated chanukah?

Bike Run

Grandpaw took me on the annual TJ memorial bike run. this is Grandpaw.

it was fun and beautiful, but a chilly 36 degrees and freezing cuz i dont have chaps...just several layers of clothes. which i may add hinders climbing on and off a bike. :-)
a sea of shiney metal. i broke out my old leather jacket and my biker boots (up to the knee) and had a fun biker chick for a day experience.

Lake O is sooo low!

LA start praying or you wont have any NorCal water. Sam went to lassen. it usually has 15 ft. there was barely traces of snow on the roadside.

"in all the earth and among all nations that which is symbolized by the ephah is becoming the great and controlling centre of society"
david baron's zechariah

The five Bloggers I will tag are:

thank you for all your sweet words on my aunt. she requested no services and to donate her body to science. which has made things a lil weird.
the kids are sick, tali has decorated herself several times today and we are trying to knit some hats for the isareli soldier chanukah project, so while i am gone here are some pictures to keep you occupied, from our family retreat last week in mt hermon.

Special Swap Movie edition

Beth and i swapped movie boxes. her box arrived monday but i am just now getting around to blogging it. it has been crazy getting unpacked, and taking tali to the dr, too. (she had a cold our whole trip!)
So it was delightful to come home to a movie in a box. Beth did an awesome job coordinating everything on a theme.
the elizabeth bennet cardigan, tea and scones fit perfectly with this movie! tirzah guessed when i opened the scones that it was pride and prejudice. when did she become a "little woman"?

Thank you Beth! I cant wait to see how the malbrigio lace weight knits up!

Knitter's Tea Swap 4

A wonderful box made its way south to my house from Canada. Tali loved opening the "happy's" (as in happy bday, happy chanukah. they are all happy presents). she likes the rocks on a stick :-)

Penny put together this box filled with Tea and cookies and a tea pot! it is so cute. and it matches my Johnson Bros. cookie jar a bit :-) you cant see but the roof of the big cookie jar and the adrker colour in the teaset rooves are the same colour.

Thank you Penny! i hope your box arrives in one piece!

The Sad News

My grandmother called this morning, i wanted it to be in a seperate post from the fun stuff...
My Aunt had back surgery, there was an aneurysm that went to her heart and she died.
Lynda would have been 50 next month.
Please keep my family in prayer and the 2 time zone travel that may need to happen.

This was very unexpected.

Spinning Guild Luncheon

WARNING: lots of pictures!
the spinning guild went to Sue's place for a day of fun. we had a fabulous lunch. and then romped with the sheep.
she raises cormo sheep which are a corriedale and merino cross.the are coated year round which keeps the "vegetable matter" out of the fiber.

you know you are at a sheep ranch when the tub is filled with their jackets :-)
Toni got out the goat cart and took Jim and Bob for a spin
Sue has sent her fleeces all over to be spun into yarn and made into roving. some were blended with soy or corn or bamboo silk. i love the ribbon of silk colours in these two.
here is her best in show lambtown fleece the fleece barn is getting a little low. the coloured fleeces are on a waiting list next year's are partially spoken for already. we played with the cast off skirted bits at the threshing bee, and even those were phenomenal compared to some of the commercial stuff.

bags of more fabulous rovings
you can purschase the fleeces, rovings, yarns etc.. at her website
see, sam. our bedroom isnt so over run with stash. :-)
i brought home a cormo soy blend roving and some fingering weight that "blooms" a lil bigger. i have a shawl in mind for thissome of the wheel variety in our group. Majacraft Suzie, an original handmade wheel, ashford traveler and joy, and jackie's new babe fresh from the box. ( she has a schaht, too)
